Bangladesh Youth Leadership Center (BYLC) hosted its first BYLC Career Fair at Lakeshore hotel on December 21, 2016. Organized by BYLC’s Office of Professional Development, the fair connected 300 university students and fresh graduates who have completed BYLC leadership programs with 20 of the country’s leading private and nonprofit sector employers, who are looking to recruit talented youth for internships and job opportunities.
The day-long event, which was a part of the American Center supported Career Readiness Program of BYLC, was inaugurated by Ann McConnell, Director of the American Center, Akhter Matin Chaudhury, Chairperson of BYLC, and BYLC President, Ejaj Ahmad.
The BYLC Career Fair worked as a platform for both the demand side (employers) and supply side (BYLC graduates) of the employment market. HR representatives were able to speak to the graduates, assess resumes, and take on-the-spot interviews of the most promising candidates.
“Leadership and communications skills are key success factors in today’s workplace. The BYLC Career Fair is a good initiative to foster these skills in today’s youth, and to connect them to potential employers.” said Abrar Anwar, CEO of Standard Chartered Bank, Bangladesh.
The fair also featured panel discussions on leadership skills for the 21st century workplace and importance of skills development for economic prosperity of Bangladesh, where speakers included Asif Saleh, Senior Director, BRAC, Homayara Ahmed, Assistant Professor, IBA, Dhaka University, Sylvana Quader, CEO, Praava Health, Quaseed Chowdhury, Director, HR, Compliance, Welfare, and Admin, Ananta Group, Towhidul Alam, Executive VP and HR head, The City Bank Limited, Bangladesh, and Nisbat Anwar, HR Head, Renata Pharmaceuticals.
In addition to providing world-class leadership training over the past eight years, BYLC launched the Office of Professional Development (OPD) in 2016 to provide professional development skills and facilitate employment opportunities for its graduates. OPD’s mission is to help students and young professionals gain critical career navigations skills to successfully transition into the job market. OPD is a part of BYLC’s greater vision to empower its graduates by proactively investing in their growth and development far beyond their graduation from leadership training programs.
The 20 companies at the BYLC Career Fair included Mutual Trust Bank Ltd, Brac Bank, The City Bank Ltd., Dhaka Bank, Green Delta Insurance Ltd., Adcomm, BRAC, ActionAid, Anwar Group, Ananta Group, Energypac Engineering Limited, bKash, U.S. Embassy, UNDP, Praava Health, Paragon Group, Renata Pharmaceuticals, Zero Gravity, Apex Footwear Ltd, and Standard Chartered Bank.
