ABOUT

As the frequency and intensity of climate change events in countries around the world increases, it is today’s youth who will face the worst effects. The UNEP projects that by 2050 the human population will reach 9.6 billion and require three planets’ worth of resources to survive. Climate scientists fear that many of the species of animals and plants we share the planet with will become extinct by the end of the century. To avert this crisis and to ensure the flourishing and survival of humanity, we must act now.

Bangladesh Youth Leadership Center (BYLC) will host the inaugural Global Youth Climate Summit, in partnership with Foundation for Climate Restoration, Resilient Markets, and the Centre for Climate Repair at Cambridge, on March 11-12, 2021.

Our commitment is to mobilize youth, build their leadership skills, and empower them to lead the fight against climate change. The Global Youth Climate Summit will bring together 500 youth, aged between 13 and 24, and engage them in an inter-generational dialogue with leading experts in the field of climate change. Some of our confirmed speakers include former chief scientific advisor to the UK Government Sir David King, MIT-trained scientist and chairman emeritus of the Foundation for Climate Restoration Peter Fiekowsky, former warden of Oxford University’s Keble College Sir Christopher Ball, Echoing Green Climate Fellow Sandra Kwak, youth climate activist, Avaaz campaigner, and BYLC graduate Risalat Khan, and prominent teen climate activists Alexandria Villaseñor and Rebeca Sabnam

COMMITMENT FOR A GREENER FUTURE

Each of the delegates at the Summit will also sign a pledge, co-created by young people for young people, to commit to the actions necessary to avert global climate catastrophe. It is one single commitment that is relevant for youth from both developing and developed countries. Though it is a global commitment, we are launching it from Dhaka, as Bangladesh is not only one of the countries worst affected by climate change, but also it is at the forefront of the fight against it. We will get 100,000 youth from around the world to sign the commitment between March and October 2021.

The global youth commitment

I pledge to do what I can to:

Mobirise

Adopt clean energy and low carbon transportation

Mobirise

Explore a more plant-based diet

Mobirise

Consider having a smaller family (of 0-2 born children)

Mobirise

Urge my community and government to prioritize the wellbeing of both ecosystems* and human beings

And I give my word that I will mobilize at least five people to join me in signing this global youth commitment.

*Ecosystems include oceans, rivers, land, forests, and atmosphere that create the conditions for our survival.

Please look at the program agenda for details on the sessions and speakers.

To apply for the prize, individuals aged between 13 to 24 are required to design a community project, to be implemented anywhere in the world within three months (April-June 2021), which promotes the wellbeing of both ecosystems and human beings. Selected projects will each receive a funding of USD 1,000.

Winning projects will be selected based on their creativity, implementation plan, and potential for impact.

No, we will only accept individual submission. However, you may work individually or in a team to execute your idea.
